Popular writing, such as writing in magazines, newspapers, and online media, requires different techniques from writing for journals and other scientific media. Although it requires a different style due to a more varied audience, the methods used are almost identical. This means that the author has to read and read a lot, do a review, and then write, and in the end, it can be published.
For this reason, in the Scientific Writing Ethics course taught by Noir P. Purba and Subiyanto for Marine Science students at Padjadjaran University, two experts often write in online media and magazines, namely Risdo and Basar Daniel. These two speakers will discuss the proper writing technique in popular media. In their presentations, both speakers emphasized the importance of reading and finding ideas in popular writing. In addition, the speaker also emphasized how systematic writing style.
This course’s students are very interested and have many questions asked during the lecture. Some of the examples presented can attract students’ attention so that the deepening of writing becomes more precise.
It is hoped that the material presented by the two speakers can provide insight to students to be more creative in uploading their work in popular media. This illustrates that the university is one of the institutions that significantly impact society. The number of highly scientific materials studied in universities must be able to be discussed by a diverse audience so that the university has a stake in society. As a final project, students are assigned to write an essay and opinion, which will be published in local and national media.
