Students in year 1 are equipped with basic knowledge and general education, which is followed in the next semester, is an introduction to the general understanding of marine science. The second year is a core subject of marine science that can be taken on three aspects: marine conservation, oceanography, and biotechnology. These include an introduction to the marine environment and its measurement and analytical and technical skills needed to develop special interests during the end of the undergraduate programme (final year), especially the provision of learning modules that support classes and practical work. In the third year is a deepening of understanding of the previous course. In the final year (year 4), students take a thesis and internships in industry. It also provides students with soft skills by means of internships involving various marine industry partners and government agencies. The Marine Science Study Program emphasises aspects of how students can create new jobs in the marine field.
Correspondingly, in 2020, the Department of Marine Science also adjusted to tertiary education in Indonesia. Universitas Padjadjaran and Marine Science Study Program in 2020 adjusted the curriculum with the concept of getting closer to the industrial world with the name “independent campus” or Kampus Merdeka. This concept emphasises how students gain knowledge not only in the classroom but also learn from the real world, such as industry, society, and other institutions that are in accordance with student competencies. The students can learn outside campus with 60 credits or 3 semesters. The students also enhance their skills by being involved in the student community with a focus on instrumentation, biotechnology community and conservation community. Besides that, every student should attend a student seminar on campus.
